Marketing With Memes
A meme is an image video or text that is meant to reference popular culture and designed to be repurposed. Memes are becoming insanely popular on social media especially among young, social-savvy consumers who are very active on the internet. Using a meme can help demonstrate that they're on the same page as their target audiences and appeal to younger consumers. Juergen Dold, CEO of creative agency Optimist Inc. says, “Within a three to five-second timeframe, you can get off a culturally loaded and expressive message.” Taking jabs at competitors, showing some personality or wedging themselves into cultural conversations are some things that big brands have been doing on social media that are gaining them a ton of attention and memes are a great way to do this. Creating some sort of social buzz as a brand is becoming increasingly relevant to social media marketing. One brand called Tipsy Elves who specializes in holiday sweaters has started to leverage memes as a medium or vehicle to get their message across in a shareable, engaging format. For marketers whose memes highlight heir brands strong self-awareness and trust in audiences can pay off significantly. A meme can be a sure-fire piece of creative that will almost always be successful given the right audience.
