How Apple's iOS 15 Will Change Email Marketing
Apple plans to roll out two new privacy features in Fall 2021 that will impact email marketing. The two new features, Mail Privacy Protection and Hide My Email, focus primarily on privacy, data tracking and user security. The rollout of iOS 15 will affect email marketing in both positive and negative ways. Here's more information on both new features.
The first new feature is called Mail Privacy Protection and will give users the option to mask their IP address. Email marketers will no longer be able to receive data on who opens the received emails nor the recipient’s physical location. Many marketers use this data to test subject lines and headers or to market to users in a particular physical location. Without this data, marketing segmentation tactics, database cleaning techniques, and the deliverability of emails by domain may all be affected.
The second new feature, Hide My Email, will be available not only on iOS 15 devices but also in macOS Monterey and iCloud settings. Users who opt to use this feature will be able to sign up for email offers using an Apple-generated randomized address instead of their real email address. Marketers will not know if the subscriber email is a “good” account or a “burner” which could cause deliverability issues resulting in increased email bounces and could also affect ISPs who can then alter the deliverability of marketer emails.
So, what can you do now as an email marketer? Do your testing now to gather open rates and remove hard bounces immediately so your email deliverability is not affected. And know that not all these changes are bad. They could force changes on email marketing that make it more effective. If consumers have more privacy, marketers will have to improve their understanding and segmenting of subscribers to their email lists. And remember that open rate does not directly correspond to conversion rate – click rates are a better measurement of conversion rate.
