5 Ways Google Alerts Can Help Build Your Small Business
Does your small business use Google Alerts? Do you even know what Google Alerts are? Once you set them up (see below), Google Alerts will notify you anytime the keywords you choose appear online. This is only for newly published content, not content already published on the internet. So, what can you even use Google Alerts for? Here are some ideas and how they can help you build your small business.
- Mentions of your business: You can set up a Google Alert with your business name or even business type so that anytime someone mentions you, you’ll be notified and can quickly interact with your current or potential customers.
- Blog mentions: If your small business has a blog, use Google Alerts to be notified when people are talking about your blog. You can build rapport with potential customers and address questions quickly.
- Industry research: How do you currently keep up on the latest industry news for your business? Google Alerts can help you stay on trend and attract new customers.
- Competition research: Set up Google Alerts to track mentions of your competition or when they release a new product. You’ll automatically get notified when they post something new so you can stay on top and competitive.
- Client research: If you have certain clients you are trying to win for your business, use Google Alerts to help you stay up to speed on their needs and wants.

LinkedIn recently published a pocket guide on the LinkedIn tools to help build brand awareness for your company on its platform. - Sponsored Content: Sponsored Content helps you reach potential customers who do not already follow your LinkedIn page but hopefully will after viewing your sponsored content. On LinkedIn you can sponsor a single image ad, video ad, or carousel ad that features multiple still images. This tool is helpful to broaden your audience and drive potential customers to your page for whitepapers, eBooks, or other helpful content. LinkedIn says over 80% of Sponsored Content interactions come from mobile devices, so make sure to only link to mobile-friendly content.
- Sponsored Messaging: Sponsored Messaging allows you to deliver messages directly to your audience (Message Ads) or deliver an interactive experience with pre-set paths in the InMail Inbox (Conversation Ads). Sponsored Messaging is best used to promote content or events directly to your targeted audience.
- Text Ads: LinkedIn Text Ads are LinkedIn’s version of pay-per-click ads. They are straightforward and allow you to closely control your budget while driving a more directed audience to your linked content. Text Ads also give insight into the demographics of who is interacting with your brand.
- Dynamic Ads: Dynamic Ads allow you to personalize ads to a specific LinkedIn member. Each ad invites the member to follow your page, subscribe to your newsletter, register for an event, etc. It shows the member’s profile picture alongside your brand image, reinforcing the thought that your brand and the member are the perfect match.
- Matched Audiences: Matched Audiences combine LinkedIn’s professional data with your own audience data to help you better qualify targeted audiences. It is composed of three separate tools – Website Retargeting, Account Targeting, and Contact Targeting.
